My experience as a Registered Provisional Psychologist enables me to offer effective therapeutic care with supervisor support and guidance. I work with individuals of all ages with a specific interest in supporting adolescents and young adults as they navigate changes, life transitions, and challenges (ie. anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, identity, sports and school issues, and low self-esteem). My background in sports and experience in education provides valuable tools for building connections and genuine understanding of children, adolescents, and young adults. I believe parents of adolescents and young adults can also benefit from increased support and care as they navigate life with their loved ones. My primary focus, regardless of client demographic, is to develop rapport, encourage autonomy, and establish client empowerment for personal discovery and moving forward.
My therapeutic approach is influenced by Person Centred Therapy as well as experience in Solution Focused Brief Therapy. My focus is to help individuals process challenges and become aware of their strengths and supports in a positive and safe environment. I achieve this by maintaining an understanding of the power of individual perspective, needs, and motivation for change while supporting clients as they work towards goals on their unique journey.
I believe each therapeutic journey is unique with a process tailored to fit each individual client. I believe strongly in the importance of collaboration and working in a partnership with my clients. My goal is to support and guide clients as they navigate their personal therapeutic process and move forward in their journey towards the change they seek.
I am a graduate of the Master of Counselling in Counselling Psychology program at Athabasca University and a Registered Provisional Psychologist. My journey on this path began with completing an Education After Degree from Concordia University College of Alberta, teaching elementary school, and taking time from the professional world to start my own family. Staying active by snowboarding, running, and looking for adventure have always been important to me and my family. My son and daughter continue to be my biggest supporters and sources of encouragement - even at their young ages!
Along with my teaching experience, I have been very fortunate to have a life-long career as a Professional Figure Skating Coach, which provides a strong foundation upon which I lean on as a counsellor as well. I am passionate about working with youth and young adults as they navigate the challenges they face and I am fortunate to have gained experience understanding various learning styles, building relationships, working as a team, and exercising flexibility in use of strategies and tools. Working with athletes of all ages has also allowed me to see the importance of building confidence, practicing mental preparation, using mindfulness, and working through anxiety, for all clients. Similar to my approach to the classroom and to coaching, I consistently strive to create a positive counselling environment with open communication, respect, support, and guidance.
